Hyundai Bad Engine Problems
No matter how much effort you put into something, it’s rare that anything we produce as human beings comes out flawless. All the engineering, technology, and know-how can’t circumvent natural and virtually unavoidable human error. Which is why some automakers have had to face the harsh reality that while their intentions were good, the vehicles they produced were discovered to have some serious flaws. Things like engine problems. And today’s blog is all about Hyundai bad engine problems.
Since 2005, More Cash For Scrap has been providing scrap car removal services all over Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley. And as such, we’ve seen a lot of late model sedans and SUVs with engine issues and engine failure. One of the brands we come across the most is Hyundai.
Certain years and models of Hyundai vehicles are riddled with engine malfunction, and safety issues as a result. Which is why many consumers choose to scrap their aging Hyundai vehicle. And when they do, they choose the scrap car removal services of More Cash For Scrap.
Faulty Hyundai Engines
Hyundai’s are known to come with an exceptional optional warranty. And when you purchase a vehicle with known engine issues that are catastrophic, a warranty is a must. Although there have been several recalls issued to various Hyundai vehicles, the fact of the matter is that not all vehicles that were affected were included in the recalls.
Which means, if you didn’t purchase the optional warranty, you’ll be out of pocket to replace your vehicle’s engine, or left to scrap it, depending on your vehicle’s age. Knowing what signs to look out for can be helpful in determining if your vehicle was affected.
The Most Common Engine Issues with Hyundai Vehicles Include:
- Engine knocking
- Debris in the oil, thus in the engine
- Burning oil
- Leaking oil
- Tapping, ticking, or knocking
- Engine power cutting in and out sporadically
- Engine fires due to oil leaks
- Severe power failure
- Difficulty starting the vehicle
- Engine seizure
- Excessive oil consumption
- Misfiring
- Intermittent stalling
As you can see, while engine failure may be the common theme amongst older Hyundai vehicles, the list of issues is lengthy. If you’re experiencing any of the above issues, check to see if your car is part of the Canada-wide recall.
And if it’s not, call our scrap car removal specialists today. We pay MORE cash for scrap cars with mechanical failure than any other junk car removal company in Metro Vancouver or the Fraser Valley!
Which Hyundai Vehicles Were Affected with Engine Failure?
A recall was issued in 2015 on Hyundai vehicles for engine failure, potential engine fire risk, and actual engine fires. It wasn’t a blanket recall put on all of the vehicles that Hyundai produces. Rather specific models and specific years, and Hyundai owners were notified by mail at their last known address.
The Hyundai Vehicles with Engine Problems Were:
- Hyundai Sonata
- Hyundai Santa Fe
- Hyundai Santa Fe Sport
- Hyundai Elantra
There were over 3 million Hyundai models recalled due to engine fire and engine failure. And because Hyundai took too long to formally issue a recall, Transport Canada and the NHTSA fined them $137 million.
The recall that was issued on Hyundai engines was on the above models produced as far back as 2011, and up to an including 2015. However, the absolute most problematic years reported by Hyundai owners were 2011 and 2012.
Which Hyundai Engines Are Bad?
According to consumer reports, Transport Canada, and the NHTSA, only certain Hyundai models were affected with engine failure and engine fire. However, that’s because the problem relates to a serious design flaw that is only relative to certain engines. The 2.0 litre turbocharged and 2.4 litre Hyundai engines were the ones that were specifically addressed as being the most problematic.
If you purchased the optional warranty, your vehicle will likely be covered, if not by the recall. However, that solely depends on whether or not you remained within the terms of your warranty since the day you bought the vehicle. Consult your Hyundai dealership for the specifics.
There was once a rumour that Hyundai vehicles came with a lifetime warranty on their engines. However, it’s speculated that this was started by Hyundai representatives to boost sales. Because the reality is, they are NOT covered under warranty for life. But engine replacement is covered if you haven’t breached the conditions of your warranty.
What If My Hyundai Wasn’t Included in a Recall?
The unfortunate fact is that not all affected vehicles were included in the recalls that were issued because of Hyundai bad engine problems. The only way to know if your car is covered is to check the VIN with the manufacturer, which can be done HERE.
While some people purchased an optional warranty (which did or did not include engine replacement), others were left with vehicles that were not included in the recall for a variety of reasons. Some consumers spent a lot of wasted time trying to get Hyundai to replace their engine at no charge, even though their VIN wasn’t part of the recall.
This was mainly because their car or SUV was doing the same thing the recalled vehicles were. However, without a VIN association, Hyundai refused to provide an engine replace at no charge in most cases.

Did Hyundai Canada Fix Their Engines?
The honest answer is yes and no. Because the known issue that was causing so many engine problems for consumers have been addressed in newer models of Hyundai vehicles. However, engine failure and fires have still been reported by consumers across Canada (and the US).
In fact, all Hyundai models between 2006 and 2021 have been flagged and are under investigation for potential fire hazard by Transport Canada and the NHTSA. Additionally, the 2015-2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport has had a recall issued due to known engine component flaws. However, many other newer models have been affected, but are not yet recalled as they are under investigation.
