Merry Christmas! and Happy Birthday (Sort of)
It’s a rare occurrence when someone has a birthday on December 25th. In fact, statistically, it is one of the least common birthdays among all other birthdays. This is second to of course, February 29th, which only occurs every four years.
However uncommon this birthday might be, many great people share their day of birth with Christmas day as well. One of which being Louis Chevrolet.
As you may have guessed by his name, Louis Chevrolet was a great car inventor and designer and produced many vehicles over the years until he died in the summer of 1941 from an unexpected heart attack. The legacy he left behind changed the automotive world forever.
Who Was Louis Chevrolet?
Louis Chevrolet was the founder and inventor of the Chevrolet Motor Car Company. Originally from Switzerland, but raised primarily in Paris, France, this gentleman found a profound love of mechanics through the world of bicycles at a very young age.
In his teenage years, he acquired various jobs working at local mechanics shops for both bicycles and cars. In his early 20’s he moved from Paris to Canada, but his time here was short lived. Not long after landing in our great nation, he promptly moved to New York to pursue his love of mechanics and engineering.
Louis was first brought into the automotive world as a car racer in Philadelphia for Autocar. However, they hired him for his outstanding engineering skills more than his ability to race. This launched his career into the world of automobile design, and only 4 years later, Buick brought Louis on board as a driver for them.
How Was Chevrolet Founded?
Despite the fact that Louis Chevrolet had no formal education or training in engineering, his keen insights into vehicle design quickly set him apart from many others in the automobile engineering field.
After becoming friends with William Durant, the owner of Buick, he resigned from automobile racing and took on a whole new path in life, which would later become his legacy.
In 1910, just one year after being hired by Durant, Louis Chevrolet partnered with his new boss and created their first vehicle together; the Buick Special 60.
Although Chevrolet was innovative and a very quick study, Durant quickly fired him just 2 years after they started their working relationship. Fortunately for the world, Louis was not that easily deterred, and he started the Chevrolet Motor Car Company on his own later on in 1911.
