Valentine’s Day & the PT Cruiser

What better way to celebrate Valentines Day than to start production of a new vehicle? Obviously, we’re kidding. However, this is precisely what Chrysler did on February 14th, 2000, when they started production of the iconic PT Cruiser.

When we say iconic, that term comes in a more bittersweet context, as what made it so “iconic” was how much consumer’s loved to hate on the PT Cruiser.

Endearingly known to many as the “PT Loser”, the PT Cruiser, while hated by many, was also loved by more when it was first released in 2001.

Although the Cruiser’s design was a combination of a panel van from the 1970’s and a hot rod, its unique look is what set it apart from every other vehicle on the market at that time. In fact, after the release of the PT Cruiser, many other car makers started releasing vehicles whose designs were based off of other nostalgic rides from the 70’s and 80’s. In a sense, the PT Cruiser was a pioneer in the automotive industry for its time.

Who Created the PT Cruiser?

Daimler-Chrysler, generally known as Chrysler (or the Chrysler Corporation) created the PT Cruiser. Previously, the Chrysler Corporation released other models of retro vehicles, but under one of their other brand names.

Vehicles like the Plymouth Prowler, were top sellers during the 1990’s. It was due to the success of vintage-styled vehicles that they designed the PT Cruiser at the start of the 2000’s. However, Chrysler was not the only automaker to create retro-inspired vehicles during this time.

Throughout the 1990’s and 2000’s, there was a lot of competition in the automotive world with various car producers launching retro vehicles every year. Chevrolet released the Chevy SSR (Super-Slow Retract), along with the HHR in later years, which was meant to be a fierce contender with Chrysler’s PT Cruiser. Although many other car makers tried, none could hit the same number of sales as Chrysler did with the launch of their PT Cruiser.

It’s a well-known fact that there are many people who wish vehicles were now like they once were back in the day.

This is usually what leads to automakers creating vehicles that are based off of older models.

Recently, Ford released a new version of their Ford Bronco, and have since redesigned it several times since its relaunched. Much of the same premise took place across many car brands in the 90’s and 2000’s as they tried to recreate many old favourites, or vehicles that resembled them.

Volkswagen came out with the VW beetle once again in 1998, which was meant to simulate the classic bug. However, the vehicle was quite different, but still became a fan favourite amongst consumers for a very long time and was known as the Slug Bug.

As mentioned before, Chevrolet launched several models that were a new take on old favourites, and brands like Mini Cooper jumped on board with the re-release of their Mini, but with newer features, technology, and improved handling and design.

Although everyone seemed to jump on the retro band wagon during this era, the PT Cruiser was one that truly stood out in the crowd, and everyone took notice.

The History of the PT Cruiser

The PT Cruiser was first presented to the world in 1997, when it was originally shown as a concept car. This took place at the Detroit Auto Show, where Americans instantly fell in love with the Cruiser.

This prompted Chrysler to get production under way, so that the vehicle could be released for sale just under 4 years later. The first PT Cruiser model was offered in a variety of trims for consumers to make their selection as unique as they were.

PT Cruiser Trims Included:

1.GTA

The PT Cruiser’s GTA trim was naturally the sportiest version of the vehicle. It provided drivers with a little bit extra kick upon acceleration as it came stocked with a turbocharged 2.4 litre engine that produced 243 horsepower and 245lb-ft of torque.

2.Touring

The touring model of the PT Cruiser is exactly what many touring models are today for vehicles of every make and model. It offered a power-controlled driver’s seat, 16-inch rims, power windows, and optional stereo enhancements. Everything you’d need to go on a road trip with friends or family.

3.Limited

The Limited PT Cruiser trim was the higher-end version of the vehicle. This one was a big seller when the Cruiser was first released as it offered leather seats, chrome accents on the interior and exterior of the vehicle and came with a sunroof.

There are many other special edition PT Cruisers that were available that were not specific to a trim. The Woodie, which was a Cruiser that came with the 1970’s wood paneling look, and the Dream Cruiser, and the Flames option (which, needless to say, had flames on the hood like an old hot rod paint job)

Why Did They Stop Making the PT Cruiser?

The PT Cruiser would stay in production until the end of 2010, when it was finally put to rest after sales consistently dropped over the years.

Although their sales started to dwindle around 2007, during their time on the market, Chrysler would sell 1.3 million PT Cruisers globally.

You can still find many of the PT Cruisers on the road today, but many of the ones that are still going are experiencing many mechanical or electrical failures due to their age.

From failing cooling systems, to blown transmission, to complete engine failure, the majority of the PT Cruisers that were made in the early 2000’s are currently parked in someone’s driveway, collecting dust and forming rust, mould, or mildew.

Sell Your Chrysler Vehicles Today for MORE Cash!

While vehicles like the PT Cruiser, and many other retro vehicles from the 1990’s and 2000’s are no longer in production, some of them are still on the road today. However, when a vehicle over 20 years old is still running, it’s generally inevitable that it won’t be for much longer.

Regardless of how much maintenance you do on a vehicle, they all reach a certain age that presents more issues than the vehicle is worth repairing. That’s why many people who have older Chrysler vehicles of any make or model, sell them to More Cash For Scrap.

Most Common Chrysler Vehicle Problems in Canada

Much like any vehicle on the market today, the Chrysler line of vehicles doesn’t come without their fair share of reported problems. Some of the mechanical failures that consumers have experienced with different models of Chrysler cars have been covered by warranties.

However, there are other issues that they are prone to, that haven’t been included in any warranty coverage or recall. For these issues, and anything like it, we offer MORE cash for scrap cars in Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley.

Some of the most common problems that Chrysler owners report, and typically choose to scrap their car because of are as follows:

1.Transmission Issues

Many Chrysler owners have reported a wide variety of transmission issues that happened prematurely. They include things like slipping gears, unable to get their vehicle out of park, unable to select certain gears, hard shifting, lurching, stalling, etc.

We see MORE vehicles with transmission issues than anything else in our line of work. This is why so many people trust the scrap car removal services of More Cash For Scrap. We always pay MORE cash for cars with transmission issues or failed transmissions.

2.Burning or Leaking Oil

While it may not seem so dire if your vehicle has a slight oil leak or is burning oil, it can lead to catastrophe if not diagnosed and repaired within a reasonable amount of time. Many consumers have reported that their Chrysler vehicles started burning oil after only owning the vehicle for a few years, and subsequently experienced engine failure.

If your engine is burning or leaking oil, the moving parts within it cannot be lubricated properly, and will eventually cause vital components to break down or seize. This, in turn, will kill your engine faster than almost anything.

This happens primarily on the 2.4L Tigershark engines. If you’re noticing an increase in your oil consumption on your Chrysler vehicle, it may be time to scrap it.

3.Engine Malfunctions

One of the most prominent issues found across all of the Chrysler line of vehicles is engine malfunction. The most common problem associated with these malfunctions is engine stalling.

Without any warning from the check engine light, a rough idle, or any other indicators, drivers experienced their vehicle stalling suddenly, and without warning. This is a huge safety risk as if you’re merging onto Highway 1 in rush hour or are making a hairy left turn in Downtown Vancouver, the last thing you want is your vehicle to suddenly lose all power, and all ability to steer it.

If your older or newer Chrysler vehicle has been experiencing engine stalling that isn’t covered under warranty and hasn’t been included in a recent recall, talk to our team of scrap car buyers today. We always offer MORE cash for scrap cars, even ones with engine issues.
